APPLE DAY 27th September 2026 What the public said.
They came from Australia, Tennessee, Bury St Edmunds and London to join in Chippy’s Community Orchard’s Apple Day and along with over 100 locals voiced their appreciation in the Visitor’s Book. One had never wassailed before – ‘what a delight’.
Others commented on feeling in touch with nature, being part of the community and enjoying traditional festivities. A parent, I guess, ‘loved the leaf printing /hammering’. This is the Japanese art of Kapazome – children sat cross legged on the ground, selected fresh leaves and flowers and, armed with tiny hammers, tapped out the natural pigments on to soft cloth which, when peeled back, revealed beautiful designs to take home.
The cakes came in for lots of praise and many ‘will be back again next year’. We welcomed two Morris sides who jingled and jigged and lead the wassailing in song. The Mayor was invited to wear her regalia. She granted the request by dancing in her Wychwayz Border Morris gear! It was heartening to be thanked ‘for your hard work and endeavours throughout the year’. Trusting that the cider soaked toast, bells, whistles and songs will encourage the trees into 2027, the next orchard event will be Blossom Day on April 25th.
